We settled on the jgo-based approach instead, which lets you consume the entire Maven-based Java collection from Python easily, without needing to fight for changes to conda or conda-forge. It would have come down to me trying to implement something I thought was a good idea, with others remaining apparently unconvinced. I tried to start a discussion on how Java components should be packaged for conda-forge, for example supporting use of conda to install any Java library available from a Maven repository, in conda-forge/#590, but the discussion was not fruitful. This is not a well-supported use case yet, but there is an issue in the jgo issue tracker ( scijava/jgo#13) which would facilitate this use case if completed.

If you really must avoid using PyImageJ for some reason (why?), you could construct your environment using jgo, which is what scyjava and pyimagej do under the hood, but then just run Fiji by calling java with all the JARs in the assembled environment on the classpath. I am calling a Fiji instance in my Python scripts by invoking the commandline to run Fiji in headless mode.
